How Many First Responders Were Lost in 9/11?

The day of the 9/11 terrorist attacks was one of the darkest days in U.S. history. It kicked off the start of the War on Terror, which was declared by George W. Bush not long after the day of the attack. The human cost of this war has been estimated to be between 480,000–507,000 people.

How many people were lost on the day of the attacks? A total of 2,977 victims’ lives were taken on that tragic day, along with the 19 hijackers that were aboard the four air planes.

Amongst these almost three thousand deaths, the lives of hundreds of first responders were also lost. The FDNY lost 343 of it’s members that day, which included 2 paramedics. Eight more members of private EMS services were killed trying to save others. A total of 71 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty, which included 23 from the NYPD and 37 members of the PAPD. A member of the Secret Service, FBI, NYFP, 5 tax enforcement officers, and 3 court administration officers were also victims.
