Halloween Urban Legends
It’s that frightful time of year again! My favorite time of year when the air smells of apples and bonfires and it’s time to pull out your favorite cozy sweater. But another thing I absolutely love about this time of year, much to the dismay of my significant other, is to be scared by horror films and haunted hayrides. I also get a lot less sleep this time of year because I stay up late at night seeking out and reading scary stores. Does anyone else do that? Reading a scary story is almost worst than watching a scary movie because your imagination is the one running wild with the story. And our own minds can come up with some truly terrifying imagery! I came across a list of urban legends that have been told for many years throughout different parts of the US and wanted to share some of my favorite ones with you.
The Gateway to Hell
Apparently there are several gateways to hell in America and Stull, KS is one of them. Stull cemetery has been rumored to have links to witchcraft, satanic cults, and Lucifer himself even used the church in the cemetery as his personal doorway to hell and back. The legend is that he can only pass through twice a year though, ast midnight during the Spring Equinox and on the spookiest night of the year — Halloween! The bones of Lucifer’s offspring are also rumored to be buried there. This legend is so popular that they say even the Pope has his plane reroute to not fly over Stull….
Stay Away from the Boo Hags.
Boo Hags are well known in the southern coastal region of South Carolina, you may have heard the term “”don’t let de hag ride ya”. Boo Hags are similar to vampires but they survive by stealing the breath of a person as they sleep, which is called “riding”. They are also known to steal a person’s skin and wear it like clothing, but that’s only if the victim struggles. After a Boo Hag steals someone’s breath (their energy) they fly off before day break and the victim wakes up none the wiser as they only feel a bit tired.
The Bunny Man
Those of you from Virginia may recognize this story. One Halloween long ago a bud that was carrying inmates from an insane asylum crashed, and one of them escaped. After that skinned haf-eaten rabbits were found hanging from trees near “Bunny Bridge”. Then it was said that a man in a bunny-suit had been spotted around the time of many murders in the area. He is said to come back every Halloween and seek out new victims…..It really makes the rabbit from Donnie Darko look like the Easter Bunny.
What scary urban legends are told where you live? Have you ever gotten a glimpse of one of these creatures?
