Drowsy Driving Statistics Across the U.S.
Driving while sleepy is dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has data that shows just how many fatalities are caused by drowsy driving. The team at Naplab compiled years of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to determine where the bulk of these fatal accidents took place. They were able to pinpoint specific American counties where the most drowsy driving deaths occurred.
Naplab researchers compared drowsy driving accidents to relative population density to make a fair assessment of which counties have the largest percentage of drowsy driving accidents.
- The county with the highest percentage of drowsy driving fatalities was Jefferson County in Alabama which had 3.31 fatalities per 100,000 people.
- This was followed by Kern County in California which had 3.06 per 100,000 people.
These were the counties with the highest number of residents. The infographic breaks down statistics for each population demographic. Exploring more data reveals more insights, but there’s no doubt that drowsy driving has serious consequences.
